Russian Dwarf Hamsters have different cages from normal hamsters. no bars, just plastic walls with some air holes. If you play with them from a young age they will get used to you and not bite you. They might be too fast, but start of with them in a little ‘playpen’ so they cant escape.

Dwarf Hamsters can be good pets, but I would not recommend them for children. They tend to be harder to tame, and if left alone for a period of time, can revert to being skittish and even “viscious.”

A regular hamster would likely be best for children, as once they are tame, they remain tame.

I know it is normal for a dwarf hamster to feel scared at first but I really want to hold them and pet them. Do you have any tips to make them less afraid or something. Also when I tried to hold the hamster,it jumped right out of my hands, lucky that my friend was there to catch it.

Okay, i am 11yrs old and i have had 5 hamsters in the past and one of them has even had babies. And sadly, my last one just passed away and I am thinking of getting a dwarf hamster, but I have a few concerns regarding their size: Im afraid that they will squeeze through the cage bars and if they get out, they might be too fast for me to catch. And ive heard that theyre real bitters. So could you please help me out by answering these questions. Thank you.

elunicocalvo 02.15.09 at 8:07 am

I agree. These animals require lot of patience, and are nocturnal: definitely not for kids.

It is normal. My hamster would run away from me

Love13Pawprints 02.15.09 at 8:07 am

Actually, dwarf hamster are the worst possible pet for kids. They like to bite, they are very fragile and can get away fast. The best pet for childeren are guinea pigs. They don’t require much more room, and they are bigger, and less nippy

Cat070992 02.15.09 at 8:07 am

hmm. I think that they just have to get used to you. but my hamsters always ran away from me when i would take them out of the cage; i think it is because they become territorial about their room. Once they are outside, they are fine.

Good luck!

i just got two yesterday, but their so scared of me ! i try to hold them and they run away from me :( as son as im near them they hide in their room, they are russian dwarf hamsters is this normal?

Cat070992 02.15.09 at 8:07 am

I used to have three dwarf hamsters and I absolutely loved them! They really weren’t hard to take care of. I do think that having two is better then just one because they seem to be friendlier and more happy. Though they may bite first, it is only because they are afraid and they will usually get over it in a little bit. Hamsters are the best and I don’t regret at all having them!

The dont like to be h eld so they bite alot

MystiqueLavender 02.15.09 at 8:07 am

It’s normal, you’ll need a bit of time before it gets used to you. Play with it to tame it, but be extra careful when handling it!
