It depends on how often you breed them, I breed mine for pets or for shows and I only ever breed a female 2 times a year, max is three times, this ensures she will have a longer happier life.
I only breed when there is interest in my stock aswell, I don't just randomly breed and try and find homes or dump them on a pet shop. Since hamsters are also all very closely related I take any new ones to the vets for blood samples and health check ups, I get my papers and compare to what stock I have and see what would be best for breeding, breeding certain coloured males with certain coloured females will give you a certain kind of batch depending on their lineage.
I don't advise anyone to just go to a pet shop buy a male and female and breed them and hope for the best.
If a female is bred too often she will die very young, most pet stores get their babies from a mass breeding hamster farm, where they are bred until they die and their genetics are quite close.
It's best just to get a hamster and enjoy it's company, then breed it and risk it dying, or getting stressed over the young.
I bred my hammies just to learn about it, and raise the babies myself. This may sound irresponsible, but I also kept all seven babies. Some people breed them to sell to the pet stores or other people, which I would never reccommend, they may be little but they still need care. Hamster can have many litters in their lifetimes, gestation isnt that long so it can be a repeat proccess every few weeks really. Each litter can yield between 5and 15 babies though!
i breed my hamsters twice in their life time . and the reason is cuz i just love my hamsters and when they r grown up i love to see their pups . my room could have about 20 cages each one alone when they grow up lol so thats all about it . just loving them !
